Today, December 13, 2025, in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province, residents came together to honor about 300,000 victims killed by Japanese troops during the Nanjing Massacre. This day, known as China’s National Memorial Day, also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Since 2014, the national flag has been flown at half-mast at the main venue of the Nanjing Massacre National Memorial Day ceremony. In a city-wide observance, people held flower tributes and other acts of remembrance in parks, schools and community centers.
At Zhengjue Temple beside the historic city wall, residents from all walks of life gathered for solemn rituals. Candles were lit 🕯️ and wreaths were placed as a sign of respect and reflection.
Though solemn, the ceremonies resonated with a shared hope for peace and unity. For many young attendees, remembering the past serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving human rights and preventing history’s darkest chapters from repeating.
