Rescue teams in the Philippines have temporarily paused their search for Typhoon Kalmaegi victims as a powerful new storm, Fung-wong, barrels toward the country. 🌪️
Kalmaegi, described as the deadliest typhoon of 2025, has claimed over 200 lives and left more than 100 missing. But with Fung-wong’s radar signature lighting up like a thriller movie, the safety of rescuers is the top priority.
'We were ordered to temporarily stop the search, rescue and retrieval at 3 pm today,' said rescue official Myrra Daven, noting that nearly 70% of Kalmaegi's fatalities occurred in one province. 'We cannot risk the safety of our rescuers.'
Fung-wong is predicted to pack winds up to 170 kph and dump 200 mm of rain, enough to flood major river basins across Luzon. Meteorologist Benison Estareja warned of widespread flooding beyond low-lying areas. 🌧️
In Aurora province, teams are going door to door, urging villagers to head for higher ground. On Catanduanes, locals are strapping down roofs with ropes to hold off the storm’s fury. 🏠
'We are hoping that there will be no casualties,' said provincial rescuer Roberto Monterola. 'The Philippines has faced many disasters already.'
As Fung-wong approaches late Sunday or early Monday, the nation braces for impact while holding onto hope that preparation can save lives.
