Trump Vows to Remove ‘Russian Threat’ from Greenland and Pushes to Buy Island

On January 18, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump fired off a Truth Social post declaring it's "time" to remove the "Russian threat" from Greenland – and promising "it will be done!!!"

Trump blasted Denmark for not acting on NATO's 20-year-old warning to push back Russian influence in the island, an autonomous territory of Denmark. "NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that 'you have to get Russian threat away from Greenland.' Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it," he wrote.

This isn't Trump's first attempt to put Greenland on the bargaining table. He's famously said the U.S. should buy the island, though leaders in both Denmark and Greenland insist it's not for sale – and have no interest in joining the United States. 🇬🇱💸

Last Saturday, the president even threatened sweeping tariffs on European allies until Washington gets the green light to make the purchase. But Denmark pointed out Greenland is already under NATO's collective security umbrella, making any "Russian threat" claim a bit puzzling.

Meanwhile, Moscow slammed the U.S. and its allies for crying wolf on a Russian menace, accusing them of double standards and moralizing from on high. 🌍🤨

As the showdown continues, one thing's clear: Greenland is at the center of a geopolitical tug-of-war – iceberg edition. ❄️🧊
