On Monday, January 19, 2026, Greenland's prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made it clear: despite recent statements from the United States – including threats of new tariffs – Greenland will chart its own course. 💪❄️
“The latest statements from the United States, including the tariff threats, will not change our position. We will not let ourselves be pressured. We stand firm on dialogue, on respect and on international law.” Nielsen wrote in a Facebook post.
Over the weekend, thousands took to the streets of Copenhagen, Nuuk and other cities across Denmark and Greenland to voice support for the island's right to self-determination. Protesters chanted slogans like “Greenland is not for sale”, demonstrating what Nielsen called “strong and dignified unity”.
Nielsen also thanked demonstrators and international leaders for their solidarity. “That means something. Not as interference, but as a clear recognition that Greenland is a democratic society with the right to make its own decisions.”
As a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland handles most domestic affairs while Copenhagen retains control over defense and foreign policy. The United States operates a military base on the island, and since returning to office in 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to “obtain” Greenland.
For adventurers, entrepreneurs and activists alike, Greenland's response shows that even in the coldest corners, the heat of democracy burns bright. 🌍💡
Will the U.S. dial down the rhetoric, or will Greenland keep raising the stakes? We'll be watching. 🔍❄️
