U.S. Flu Season Surges: 18M+ Cases, 230K Hospitalizations

As of mid-January 2026, the United States has seen more than 18 million flu cases this season, according to the CDC's latest estimates. Hospitalizations have hit 230,000 and at least 9,300 people have lost their lives to influenza so far. 😷

The CDC reports that flu activity has leveled off or dipped for the second straight week, but it remains elevated nationwide. Influenza A (H3N2) viruses have been the most common culprit this year, linked to many severe cases.

Last week (week ending January 10) saw 15 flu-associated pediatric deaths, bringing the total to 32 young lives lost this season. Alarmingly, 90% of these children were not fully vaccinated against the flu. 💔

In the U.S., flu season usually peaks between December and February, so community spread is still underway. If you or loved ones aged six months and older haven't gotten your flu shot yet, the CDC urges you to get vaccinated ASAP. 💉

  • 18M+ cases, 230K hospitalizations, 9.3K deaths
  • A(H3N2) is the dominant strain
  • 32 pediatric deaths; 90% unvaccinated
  • Peak season: Dec-Feb; get your shot!
