⚔️ Feeling like a scene from Dad's Army? The UK is set to welcome more seasoned heroes into its ranks.
This week, the British government announced it will raise the maximum age for military reservists from 55 to 65, adding a decade of potential service for former personnel.
Why now? European neighbours like France and Germany have also beefed up reserve forces in response to Russia's ongoing operation in Ukraine, and the US has urged Europe to step up its own defence.
Under the new rules, which come into force in spring 2027, retired sailors, soldiers and aircrew can be mobilised for "warlike preparations" in addition to the current triggers of national danger, a great emergency or an attack on the UK.
Paul Griffiths, the general leading the effort, says these changes will "allow us to mobilize that talent rapidly when it matters most, strengthening our readiness."
Today, around 95,000 veterans make up the UK's strategic reserve. By tapping into the wisdom of those in their 60s, the UK hopes to boost its defence muscle without building entirely new forces.
Whether you're a history buff who loved the 1970s show Dad's Army or a defence enthusiast tracking global security trends, this move is a clear sign that modern conflicts need modern solutions and sometimes age is just a number! 💂♂️✨
