China urges restraint to avert deeper Middle East turmoil

🕊️ On Thursday, January 15, 2026, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the escalating tensions around Iran.

Sun Lei, the deputy permanent representative of the Chinese mainland to the United Nations, spoke in the session and firmly opposed any threat or use of force against Iran. He stressed that Iran's internal affairs should be decided independently by its people.

Sun pointed out that in recent weeks the United States has issued open threats of force, raising concerns across the region. He reminded the council that the Chinese mainland consistently upholds the UN Charter and international law, rejects imposing one country's will on another, and opposes a return to the 'law of the jungle'.

Emphasizing sovereign equality and non-interference, Sun said these are the cornerstones of modern international relations. He called on the international community to support Iran's government and people in overcoming challenges while keeping national security and social stability intact.

He also noted that most countries in the region have expressed strong concern about the risk of military confrontation and hope disputes can be solved through dialogue. Sun urged all parties to heed these calls and take steps that promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

'Peace and development are the shared aspirations of people in all countries,' Sun said. 'Blind faith in force and arbitrary interference only breeds more conflict and hatred. No country has the right to decide the fate of another.'

As global energy markets and international relations hang in the balance, China's appeal for restraint aims to steer tensions away from further escalation and toward peaceful dialogue.
