Somalia Scraps UAE Deals Over Sovereignty Concerns

On Monday, Somalia’s Council of Ministers announced a bold decision: annulling all agreements with the United Arab Emirates, including key port operations in Berbera, Bosaso and Kismayo, as well as defense and security pacts. 🇸🇴🚢

According to the government, credible reports revealed “hostile actions undermining national sovereignty, territorial unity, and political independence.” Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi took to X to confirm the move, echoing concerns over growing external influence.

The UAE’s investments in East Africa, estimated at around $47 billion by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, have mostly flowed into Somaliland—a self-declared but unrecognized state since 1991. The flagship deal? A $442 million, 30-year concession for DP World to develop the Port of Berbera. 🔌💼

Tensions flared further when Aidarous al-Zubaidi, leader of Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council, reportedly passed through Berbera on January 8. Somalia’s immigration authority launched an investigation into the “unauthorized use” of its airspace and airports. 🛩️👀

Somalia’s federal structure grants significant autonomy to regions like Puntland and Jubaland, both of which have close UAE ties. It remains to be seen if these states will honor the central government’s directive amid ongoing disputes over elections and constitutional reforms.

As the Horn of Africa watches, this standoff spotlights the delicate balance between safeguarding national sovereignty and engaging global partners. Will Somalia’s move set a regional precedent? Stay tuned. 🌍⚖️
