This week, European nations have rallied behind Greenland in a bold show of solidarity after U.S. President Donald Trump reignited calls for America to take control of the Arctic island.
On Sunday, January 11, Rasmus Jarlov, chair of the Danish Defence Committee, warned that any military showdown over Greenland would be “the dumbest war in history.”
In an interview with Sky News, Jarlov called Trump’s ambition to seize Greenland a contender for “the most illegitimate land claim in modern history.” He noted that neither Russia nor China has any presence on the island—no consulates, no mining, no ownership. “The Greenlanders have made it very, very, very clear that they do not want to become Americans and that they are not for sale,” he added.
British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also weighed in, describing talks of a potential troop deployment as “business-as-usual” NATO coordination. Reports suggest London has been in discussions with French and German counterparts about a NATO military presence in Greenland.
Since taking office in January 2025, President Trump has repeatedly voiced interest in controlling the Arctic territory—a move met with firm pushback from Copenhagen and its European allies. For now, Greenland and Denmark remain united in deciding the island’s future. 🌍🛡️❄️
