In a bold declaration yesterday at the White House, US President Donald Trump said he wants to secure Greenland for the United States – and he’s not taking no for an answer. ❄️
Speaking at a roundtable with oil and gas executives on January 9, Trump warned that a deal to acquire Greenland will happen “the easy way” or “the hard way.” “I would like to make a deal the easy way,” he said, “but if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way.”
When asked about reports the administration might pay Greenlanders to join the US, Trump was noncommittal: “I’m not talking about money for Greenland yet.”
Behind the scenes, Danish Ambassador Jesper Moller Sorensen and Jacob Isbosethsen, who leads Greenland’s representation in Washington, met White House officials on January 8. According to a White House statement this week, “utilizing the U.S. military” remains an option if needed.
But both Denmark and Greenland officials have made it crystal clear: Greenland is not for sale. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen even warned that any military move against a NATO ally would jeopardize the alliance’s security framework established after World War II. 🇩🇰
The saga leaves many wondering: will Trump dial down his pitch, or is Greenland really the next frontier for a land deal? Stay tuned as this icy showdown unfolds. 🌍
