Spain’s Sánchez Warns US Operation in Venezuela Sets Dangerous Precedent

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez fired a warning shot this week after Washington's daring operation in Venezuela's capital, Caracas. Speaking in Paris at the Coalition of the Willing meeting on Ukraine, Sánchez called the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro a “terrible and very dangerous precedent” that could push the world into a “future of uncertainty and insecurity.”

He noted that “we've seen how invasions driven by the thirst for oil have backfired in the past,” urging respect for international law and sovereignty. He stressed that Spain “cannot recognize the legitimacy” of a military action aimed at overthrowing a government to grab its natural resources. 🛑

Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares echoed the prime minister's stance, calling the U.S. raid “clearly contrary to international law” and insisting that violent force be completely absent from any country's foreign policy.

In a striking comparison, Sánchez recalled President Donald Trump's threat to annex Greenland, warning that any attack on a nation's territorial integrity—be it Venezuela or a European state like Denmark—must not go unanswered.

“We will not stay silent in the face of these increasingly frequent violations of international law,” Sánchez concluded. He promised Spain would work to “strengthen multilateralism” and use “all the resources at our disposal” to uphold legality on the global stage. 🌍
