Uganda Bans Live Riot Broadcasts Ahead of Jan 15 Election

On January 4, 2026, Uganda’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and National Guidance announced a ban on live broadcasts and streams of riots, unlawful processions, and violent incidents ahead of the January 15 election. Officials say the move aims to prevent tensions from escalating and curb panic among voters. 📺🗳️

The ministry also prohibits any content it labels "inciting, hateful, or violent." Activists and opposition figures have warned of a possible internet shutdown—mirroring the last vote in 2021—but the ICT ministry denied such plans. In its statement, it stressed: "Claims suggesting otherwise are false, misleading, and intended to cause unnecessary fear and tension among the public."

ICT Permanent Secretary Aminah Zawedde highlighted the importance of responsible media during elections: "Media platforms and the ministry serve as pillars of democratic participation by ensuring citizens have access to accurate and timely information. Responsible coverage helps maintain peace, public order, and national stability."

Civil society groups are calling for clear guidelines to protect legitimate news coverage while upholding the ban’s goals. With ten days until polls open, all eyes are on how this policy will shape information flow and influence voter confidence in Uganda’s fast-approaching election. 🌐🤝
