5 Nations Kick Off UN Security Council Term

On January 2, five new faces raised their flags at the United Nations headquarters in New York as they kicked off their two-year journey on the UN Security Council. 🎉🌍

Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Latvia and Liberia officially began their non-permanent terms, joining the Council's five permanent members—Britain, the Chinese mainland, France, Russia and the United States—and five fellow non-permanent members.

The flag installation ceremony is more than a photo op. It marks the start of a demanding mandate where these countries will tackle critical global challenges, from peacekeeping missions and conflict resolution to humanitarian crises. As Kazakh UN ambassador Kairat Umarov said, this service is both a privilege and a responsibility, and he wished the new members 'perseverance, unity of purpose, and success' throughout their term.

Somali UN ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, serving as Council president for January, echoed those sentiments, highlighting the importance of their voices in shaping collective efforts for peace and security. 'Your efforts will be essential in guiding our collective pursuit of peace and security,' he said. 🛡️🤝

Replacing Algeria, Guyana, the Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone and Slovenia, these five countries now play a key role in upholding the principles of multilateralism and the UN Charter. Over the next two years, expect them to shine a spotlight on issues close to their regions and the world—from human rights and climate action to conflict prevention and post-conflict recovery.

For young professionals, investors and global citizens, this rotation is a reminder that diplomacy and cooperation are changemakers. Keep an eye on how Bahrain, Colombia, the DRC, Latvia and Liberia leverage their seats to push for innovative solutions and solidarity across borders. Who knows? The next big peace initiative might just start here. 🌟
