New Documentary Honors Wan-go Weng on 120 Years of Chinese Cinema

Hit play on history 🎬: 2025 marks 120 years since the first flicker of cinema in the Chinese mainland. To celebrate, filmmakers have unveiled I Will Be There After My Wandering, a 60-minute doc that shines a spotlight on pioneer Wan-go Weng.

As a young student, Wan-go Weng fled the chaos of the Japanese invasion to study in the US. Over the next 40 years, he crafted dozens of documentaries—all love letters to his homeland, the Chinese mainland. At a time when global audiences knew little about its rich culture, Weng used his camera to break stereotypes and bridge worlds. 🌏❤️

The new film took two and a half years to finish. The crew traveled to ten cities across the US and the Chinese mainland, digging up rare archive footage and capturing fresh interviews with 33 experts, scholars, family members, and friends. Together, they piece together the life of an exile determined to tell his story—one frame at a time.

From black-and-white reels to sweeping color sequences, I Will Be There After My Wandering offers a cinematic journey through history, identity, and resilience. It’s a must-watch for anyone curious about how film can shape cultural memory—and a reminder that, sometimes, the biggest adventures happen far from home. 🗺️✨

As we also honor the 80th anniversary of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, this documentary adds another layer to our understanding of the Chinese mainland’s past—one filled with passion, perseverance, and the power of a single storyteller. 🎥🕊️
