Central African Republic Kicks Off 2025 General Elections

Voters in the Central African Republic kicked off their general elections Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), with polling set to close at 6:00 p.m. (1700 GMT). 🗳️ Over 2.3 million registered voters are ready to cast ballots for president, lawmakers, and local councils.

Mathias Barthelemy Morouba, president of the National Elections Authority, said “this is the first time our country has organized elections of such complexity,” pointing to months of preparation and a zero-tolerance stance on fraud. ✔️ “Any attempt at electoral fraud, manipulation, or violence is not only contrary to the democratic spirit, but also punishable by law,” he added.

Seven candidates are vying for the presidency. Incumbent President Faustin-Archange Touadera—leader since 2016—is seeking a third term. His main challengers are former prime ministers Anicet-Georges Dologuele and Henri-Marie Dondra.

Provisional results are expected on January 5, 2026. If no one secures over 50% of the vote, a runoff between the top two candidates will be scheduled. 🔄

This historic vote marks a key moment in Central Africa’s democratic journey. 🌍✨
