Myanmar Kicks Off Phase 1 of 2025 Elections

🗳️ Myanmar kicked off the first phase of its 2025 multiparty democratic general elections on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Young voters and seasoned politicians alike flocked to 21,517 polling stations spread across 692 constituencies in this historic moment.

This year’s vote marks the debut of the Mixed-Member Proportional system (MMP), merging First-Past-the-Post and Proportional Representation, alongside the new Myanmar Electronic Voting Machine. Nearly 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties are in the race for seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw (lower house), Amyotha Hluttaw (upper house), and state and regional Hluttaws.

Overseas voters have already cast advance ballots at embassies and consulates, and election observation teams from around the globe have arrived to ensure transparency 🎉. The outcomes of these three phases—continuing on January 11 and January 25, 2026—will shape the Union Parliament, which will then elect a new president to form the next Union Government.

Myanmar’s last general elections took place in November 2020. As the country takes this next step in its democratic journey, all eyes are on these ballots to see how the new systems and young voices will influence the future of this Southeast Asian nation.
