UNSC to Meet on Venezuela After U.S. Oil Blockade Claims

Hey amig@s! Next week, on Tuesday, December 23 at 3 p.m., the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an emergency meeting on Venezuela’s request. Why? Caracas is claiming a U.S. oil blockade that it says breaks international law. 🌎🛢️

In a statement on December 17, Venezuela’s Permanent Mission to the UN slammed U.S. President Donald Trump for violating the country’s sovereignty. They called on the UNSC to step in and "uphold international law" against what they describe as "U.S. aggression."

Tensions have been heating up for months. The U.S. has ramped up military patrols in the Caribbean, claiming it’s all about fighting drug trafficking. Venezuela sees it as political pressure to oust President Nicolas Maduro. The situation spiked when American forces seized an oil tanker heading out of Venezuela and slapped sanctions on more ships.

Just last Wednesday, Trump declared a blockade on “sanctioned oil vessels” moving in and out of Venezuela. He argues that oil revenues are funding “drug terrorism, human trafficking, murder and kidnapping” and even accused Venezuela of stealing U.S. oil. Caracas called these accusations baseless and branded Washington’s actions as "crude piracy." 🚢⚖️

The stakes go beyond Venezuela. Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned the U.S. against “fatal mistakes” that could destabilize the entire Western Hemisphere. Moscow voiced its support for Maduro’s government, urging Latin America and the Caribbean to stay a “zone of peace.” 🤝

What’s next? The UNSC’s response on December 23 could shape regional stability and set a new test for international law.

  • When: Tuesday, Dec 23, 2025, at 3 p.m. (New York time)
  • Why: Venezuela accuses the U.S. of illegally blocking its oil exports
  • Watch for: UNSC’s next moves and potential diplomatic breakthroughs
