Senegal Elected to Lead ECOWAS Commission (2026–2030)

Yesterday, December 14, 2025, at the 68th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria, Senegal made history by being elected to head the ECOWAS Commission for the 2026–2030 term. It’s the first time Senegal has taken on this leadership role!

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye thanked fellow member states for their trust 🤗 and pledged to steer ECOWAS toward stronger unity, peace, and stability across West Africa. “I am honored to serve,” Faye said, “and I look forward to pushing forward development programs that benefit all our communities.”

As President of the ECOWAS Commission, Senegal will coordinate regional policies, implement development initiatives, represent ECOWAS on the world stage, and ensure transparent management of financial and human resources. This leadership comes at a pivotal moment: ECOWAS, founded in 1975, now has 12 member states after Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger withdrew earlier this year.

Youthful energy, digital innovation, and a commitment to inclusive growth are at the heart of Faye’s vision. From boosting trade to strengthening conflict resolution mechanisms, Senegal’s presidency aims to make the region more connected and resilient 🌐🤝.

With Senegal at the helm, the next five years could open new chapters for West African integration—and give young entrepreneurs, students, and travelers fresh opportunities to engage with a dynamic region on the rise.
