On Thursday, December 11, 2025, Nairobi buzzed with excitement as the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) wrapped up. Nearly 6,000 delegates from governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector came together under the banner “Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet” 🌍.
After days of lively debates and collaborative workshops, member states adopted 11 resolutions, three decisions and a powerful ministerial declaration to tackle the world’s triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. Key highlights:
- Coral reef protection and restoration 🪸
- Responsible management of minerals, metals, chemicals and waste ♻️
- Ethical and sustainable use of artificial intelligence in environmental monitoring 🤖
- Boosting international cooperation on wildfire response 🔥
- Glacier conservation and strategies against harmful algal blooms ❄️
The ministerial declaration reaffirmed fairness and inclusiveness in environmental decision-making, ensuring all voices—from Indigenous communities to youth activists—are heard. UNEP also secured approval for its medium-term strategy (2026–2029) and the programme of work and budget for 2026–2027, setting a strong financial foundation for upcoming initiatives 💼.
Closing the session, Jamaica’s minister for water, environment and climate change, Matthew Samuda, was elected president of UNEA-8. Mark your calendars: the next assembly will take place from December 6 to 10, 2027, promising even more momentum for saving our planet 🌱.
UNEA-7 showed that when the world unites, progress is possible. Now it’s on all of us—students, professionals, travelers and change-makers—to keep the momentum going. Ready to join the journey?
