On Friday evening, December 12, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to stop all shooting along their border, effective immediately. ✌️
"I had a very good conversation this morning with the Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Manet, concerning the very unfortunate reawakening of their long-running war," Trump wrote, adding that both sides are ready for peace.
Trump also credited Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for playing a key role in encouraging both neighbors to return to the negotiating table. 🤝
The border dispute initially flared up with skirmishes in late July 2025, but tensions boiled over again this past Sunday, December 7, after both sides accused each other of launching attacks. Casualties and civilian displacements rapidly mounted:
- Thailand: Nine soldiers killed, over 120 injured, and nearly 200,000 civilians displaced, according to Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri.
- Cambodia: At least 10 civilians killed and 60 wounded, with more than 300,000 people evacuated, the Ministry of Interior reported.
For months, communities on both sides of the border lived under the threat of renewed fighting. With this ceasefire in place, local leaders and international mediators will now work to turn down the heat and revive diplomatic talks. 🌐
Stay tuned as we follow developments and hear from residents affected by the border clashes. 🇹🇭🇰🇭
