A powerful M7.5 earthquake rocked Japan’s Honshu region late on Monday, Dec 7, sending tremors through Aomori Prefecture and beyond. The temblor struck off the eastern coast of Honshu at around 11:15 p.m., at a depth of 54 km, according to revised data released by the Japan Meteorological Agency early on Tuesday, Dec 8.
The epicenter was pinpointed at 41.0°N, 142.3°E, off Aomori’s shoreline. Swift updates from local officials confirm at least 30 people sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to more serious trauma. 'I have received reports of 30 injured,' said Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi.
Authorities ordered more than 100,000 residents across several prefectures to evacuate as a precaution. Although initial tsunami warnings have been lifted, the JMA reminds everyone to stay alert for strong aftershocks this week. ⚡️
Emergency teams are surveying affected areas, and shelters are open for displaced families. If you have friends or family in northeastern Japan, now’s a good time to check in and make sure they’re safe. 📱❤️
