UN Alarm: Violence Surges in SE Central African Republic

UN Sounds Alarm Over Spiking Violence in CAR’s Mboki Region

On Thursday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) raised the alarm about deadly ambushes and rising tensions in the southeast of the Central African Republic. Local sources reported that armed attacks on Sunday and Monday killed several civilians, burned homes, and forced around 1,000 people to seek safety at a Catholic church in Mboki. 😢

Humanitarian teams have struggled to reach the region due to insecurity and poor communications. Just last week, two staff members from a local organization partnering with the UN Population Fund were wounded by stray bullets while delivering food, protection, and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) support. 🚑

While parts of the country have seen improvements, OCHA warns that violence is growing in rural areas, leaving 50,000 people in need of urgent aid. The International Crisis Group’s November report notes that the state’s overall security has stabilized, but armed groups still clash over mining sites and engage in banditry. 💣⛏️

As tensions rise, aid agencies are calling for better access to deliver lifesaving assistance and protect vulnerable communities. The coming weeks will be crucial to ensure that displaced families in Mboki and beyond receive the support they desperately need. 🤝
