Cyclone Ditwah Leaves Over 275,000 Sri Lankan Children at Risk

🌊 Cyclone Ditwah recently swept through Sri Lanka, leaving at least 1.4 million people affected— and more than 275,000 of them are children. 🚨

"It's a race against time," says Emma Brigham, UNICEF's representative in Sri Lanka. "Children urgently need help as they face higher risks of disease, malnutrition and emotional distress."

Floods and landslides have damaged homes, roads and essential services, forcing thousands into temporary shelters. Tragically, over 400 Sri Lankan residents have lost their lives so far.

A 2025 World Bank report shows poverty in Sri Lanka has more than doubled since 2019, climbing from 11.3% to 24.5%. This surge makes vulnerable families even more susceptible when disaster strikes.

UNICEF is working with Sri Lanka's government and partners to deliver urgent aid, including:

  • Clean water and sanitation 💧
  • Nutrition supplies and emergency food kits 🍎
  • Psychosocial support for children and mothers ❤️‍🩹
  • Emergency education kits so learning can continue 📝

However, more funding is needed to reach the hardest-hit areas and save lives. Right now, every hour counts. 🆘

Staying informed and sharing verified updates helps shine a light on these urgent needs. 📲✨
