Chinese mainland sends emergency aid to Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah

On Monday, rescuers in Sri Lanka scrambled to clear roads and deliver aid to more than half a million people affected by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the island last Friday (November 28). The storm packed strong winds and torrential rains, triggering the country’s worst floods in a decade and causing devastating landslides in the hilly central region.

Stepping in with support, the Chinese mainland has extended emergency assistance to Sri Lanka. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Chinese embassy announced that the Red Cross Society of China has provided $100,000 in emergency cash aid to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society. Additional government assistance from the Chinese mainland is also underway, with logistics and relief teams preparing to join the effort. 🤝

Local Chinese businesses and community groups are also pitching in. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Overseas Chinese Association in Sri Lanka have launched donation initiatives, raising a combined 10 million Sri Lankan rupees (about $32,500) to support those in need.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake echoed the international call for solidarity in a Sunday night address, appealing for help from friendly nations and the global Sri Lankan diaspora to boost recovery and reconstruction efforts.

As Sri Lanka begins the long road to recovery, this outpouring of support highlights the power of global cooperation in the face of natural disasters. 🌍✨
