Guinea-Bissau’s Transitional President Horta Inta-A Unveils New Cabinet

This past Saturday (November 29), Guinea-Bissau’s transitional president, Horta Inta-A, unveiled a fresh 28-member cabinet spanning 23 ministries and five secretariats of state—part of his one-year mandate following last week’s military takeover. 🗳️

In the spotlight: Joao Bernardo Vieira steps in as minister of foreign affairs, international cooperation and communities; Mamasaliu Embalo takes the helm at interior and public order; and former foreign minister Carlos Pinto Pereira becomes minister of justice and human rights.

All appointees share roots in deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s electoral camp, with four holding posts in the previous administration. This blend of continuity and change could shape the political dynamics ahead of new elections.

Earlier moves this week included naming Tomas Djassi as chief of general staff of the armed forces and Ilidio Vieira Te as prime minister and minister of finance. These steps followed the military’s declaration of "full control" over state authority on Wednesday, November 26, aimed at stabilizing the nation amid contested election delays.

On Thursday, November 27, Inta-A was sworn in as transitional president, charged with steering Guinea-Bissau through a critical period. The November 23 polls—where Embalo was seeking re-election—are still awaiting official results, keeping the political atmosphere on edge.

With the new cabinet in place, all eyes are on how Inta-A’s team will tackle challenges like economic recovery, international partnerships, and election preparations. Stay tuned for the next chapter in Guinea-Bissau’s journey! 🌍✨
