Earlier this week, from November 22 to 25, relentless heavy rains 🌧️ caused rivers in North Sumatra to burst their banks, triggering destructive floods and landslides across seven regencies and cities.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of North Sumatra, 13 people have lost their lives in the disaster—nine in South Tapanuli Regency and four in Central Tapanuli Regency. An additional 37 residents were injured, and three remain missing in South Tapanuli as emergency teams continue their search.
The impacted areas include Central Tapanuli, the city of Sibolga, Mandailing Natal, South Tapanuli, North Tapanuli, South Nias and Padangsidimpuan. Hundreds of homes 🏠, schools and public facilities have been damaged, forcing thousands to seek temporary shelter.
Sri Wahyuni Pancasilawati, head of emergency handling, equipment and logistics at BPBD North Sumatra, says data collection and rescue operations are ongoing. Local authorities are working around the clock to restore access and support affected families.
As communities rally to clear debris and help neighbors, officials remind everyone to stay alert for weather updates and follow evacuation orders if needed. Our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragic event. 🙏
