⚠️ Earlier today at 6:01 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Kyushu, Japan, was jolted by an earthquake. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) measured it at magnitude 5.7, while the China Earthquake Networks Center reported 5.3. The epicenter lay 20 kilometers below sea level off Kumamoto prefecture.
In Ubuyama village, locals experienced an upper-5 tremor on Japan’s 7-point intensity scale—strong enough to sway lamps and coffee cups. Aso city in Kumamoto and Taketa city in Oita prefecture felt lower-5 shakes.
