Between November 19 and 22, Zhao Leji, chairman of China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, paid an official goodwill visit to New Zealand. He met with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Speaker of the House Gerry Brownlee, aiming to deepen cooperation 🌏🤝.
During talks in Auckland and Wellington, Zhao highlighted the fruitful results of China–New Zealand partnership over the past decade and said China is ready to consolidate traditional friendship, boost trade and investment, and enhance mutual trust. He invited New Zealand to join hands on people-to-people and cultural exchanges, environmental protection, and agricultural cooperation.
Prime Minister Luxon praised the long-lasting friendship between the two nations and reiterated New Zealand's commitment to the one-China policy. He expressed eagerness to expand collaboration in economy, education, tourism, and more to benefit both societies.
At a meeting with Speaker Brownlee, Zhao called for stronger multilateral exchanges among legislative bodies to promote fair and equitable global governance. Brownlee affirmed New Zealand's parliament is keen to strengthen ties with the Chinese mainland's National People’s Congress.
Outside formal talks, Zhao joined the opening ceremony of a memorial museum for Rewi Alley in Christchurch and visited a local family at Gilchrist Brothers Farm, enjoying farm life and local hospitality ☕️🚜.
As the second decade of their comprehensive strategic partnership unfolds, both sides look forward to writing a new chapter in China–New Zealand ties, powered by cooperation, friendship and shared opportunities.
