🚨 Yesterday (Nov 22), a Houthi-run court in Sanaa issued a jaw-dropping ruling: 18 Yemeni aid workers employed by UN agencies were sentenced to death by firing squad in a public execution.
The court accused them of spying for Israel, the United States, Britain and Saudi Arabia, allegedly tracking movements of Houthi leaders and sharing details on missile sites. Two other aid workers, including a woman, received 10-year prison terms on the same charges.
This verdict comes after August airstrikes on Sanaa that targeted Houthi officials and military sites, killing dozens and including 12 ministers and the Houthi military chief of staff. In retaliation, the group stormed UN offices and detained dozens of aid workers.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the sentences, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all UN staff. He warned that blocking humanitarian relief could push millions in Yemen closer to famine.
As tensions explode in the region, the world is watching: what's next for Yemen's aid community and the people depending on them? 🌍🤔
