Chinese mainland envoy rebuts U.S. climate accusations at UN 🌍

🔥 Sparks flew at a recent United Nations Security Council meeting when the Chinese mainland's deputy UN envoy, Geng Shuang, pushed back hard against U.S. claims that the Chinese mainland is gaming the system on climate policy.

At the meeting on climate and security, U.S. representative Dan Negrea accused the Chinese mainland of undercutting economic rivals through lax climate rules and urged other UN members to follow the United States' lead. 💥

Geng Shuang fired back, pointing out that the Chinese mainland, home to 1.4 billion people and the world’s second-largest economy, accounts for over 30% of global growth each year, while keeping its per capita emissions far from the top of the leaderboard.

He stressed that the Chinese mainland has been recognized by the international community as one of the most committed players in fulfilling emission-reduction pledges, describing it as 'a doer in the global response to climate change.' 🌍💪

With a touch of irony, Geng noted that one Security Council permanent member leads the world in historical greenhouse gas emissions and per-person pollution, having twice pulled out of the Paris Agreement—moves that set climate action back decades.

'In climate change, who's stepping up? Who's shirking?' asked Geng. 'The global community sees who's playing fair and who's throwing curveballs.' ⚖️

He wrapped up by calling on countries to ditch the blame game and ramp up cooperation and solidarity on climate action—because our planet can’t wait. 🤝🌱
