Picture this: a routine patrol in southern Lebanon turns tense when a drone shadow hovers overhead… 🚁 The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Sunday condemned a second Israeli drone strike near its troops this month, calling it a serious violation of UN Security Council resolution 1701.
According to UNIFIL, an Israeli drone dropped a grenade near a peacekeeping post in the village of Kafer Kela just before noon on Friday, lightly wounding one peacekeeper. Witnesses said two drones had been spotted near the site earlier. ⚠️
“This is the second Israel Defense Forces grenade attack on peacekeepers this month,” UNIFIL said. “It shows disregard for the safety of those working to restore stability along the border.”
The mission urged Israel to halt attacks on or near UN personnel, who are on the ground under a Security Council mandate to keep the peace. 🕊️
Earlier this month, on October 2, drones also dropped grenades near peacekeepers and Lebanese soldiers in Maroun al-Ras, where teams were clearing rubble in the border village.
Since the Gaza war began in October 2023, cross-border clashes have escalated, and UNIFIL positions have come under fire multiple times. Even after a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has continued periodic strikes in Lebanon, citing Hezbollah threats, and has missed a withdrawal deadline set for February 18.
