Komeito Ends 25-Year Coalition with Japan’s LDP

Japan's political scene just got a major shake-up! ⚡️ Komeito, the LDP's junior coalition partner for over two decades, announced it will end their 25-year alliance.

Komeito leader Tetsuo Saito met with LDP chief Sanae Takaichi and said the split is due to three big disagreements: historical views including visits to the Yasukuni Shrine, concerns over policies toward foreigners, and a push for stricter political funding reforms.

On cash rules, Komeito wanted a clear cap on business donations—20 million yen per year per party 💸—to curb corporate influence. The LDP, Japan's top recipient of corporate funds, wasn’t on board.

With funding issues unresolved, Saito confirmed Komeito won’t back Takaichi in the Diet’s vote for prime minister 👀, forcing the LDP to seek new allies among opposition parties.

What’s next? Without Komeito’s support, the LDP’s path to appointing its first female leader just got steeper. All eyes are on how Japan’s political puzzle will be reassembled ahead of the parliamentary session.
