Hey news fans, island vibes meet political drama… 🏝️🗳️ The Seychelles is heading to a second round of voting after a photo finish in the presidential race. No candidate crossed the 50% mark in round one, so the top two will battle it out from October 9 to 11.
Among 8 hopefuls, Patrick Herminie of United Seychelles pulled 48.8% – just shy of victory. Incumbent President Wavel Ramkalawan of the Seychellois Democratic Union (Linyon Demokratik Seselwa, or LDS) earned 46.4%. Since the constitution demands a majority, they're off to a runoff!
And there's more: in the National Assembly polls, United Seychelles snagged 20 seats, while LDS took 15. That majority boost has Herminie pumped: "Thanks to the people of Seychelles for making the very wise decision to revisit the percentage of representation in the National Assembly and to give me that support of almost 49 percent so that I can go into a second round," he said. Meanwhile, Ramkalawan congratulated his rivals and promised a peaceful, "civilized campaign" in this rematch.
With sun, sea, and a tight election on the horizon, all eyes are on this tropical showdown. Stay tuned to see who'll lead the Seychelles next! 🌅
