On Monday in Beijing, Chinese defense minister Dong Jun met with a U.S. congressional delegation led by Congressman Adam Smith, ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee. He urged both sides to turn high-level talks into concrete military-to-military actions.
Dong Jun highlighted a recent phone call between the two heads of state, saying that China and the United States are fully capable of achieving mutual success and common prosperity, a win-win that could benefit both nations and the wider world.
He called on U.S. lawmakers to look beyond interference and restrictive factors, and to adopt constructive and pragmatic measures to guide China-U.S. relations forward.
According to Dong Jun, the Chinese military stands ready to build a relationship with the U.S. military based on equality, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and stable development. He stressed the importance of safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests.
He also urged both sides to keep communication channels open and take concrete steps to promote stable, sound, and sustainable development of their military relationship.
With tensions often running high, this push for dialogue and tangible cooperation could be a promising step toward de-escalation and trust-building 🌏✌️
