In a landmark move that’s got everyone buzzing, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Sunday welcomed the UK, Canada and Australia’s recognition of an independent State of Palestine. 🎉 He called it a “correction of a historical error” that aligns with people’s demand to live with dignity.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer popped up in a video message earlier, announcing that the UK now “formally recognizes the State of Palestine” and urging a return to the two-state solution.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong released a joint statement declaring that Australia supports the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney soon followed suit, confirming Canada’s recognition.
Portugal joined the wave on the same day. Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel, speaking at the Portuguese UN mission in New York, insisted that a two-state solution is the “only path to peace,” and stressed the need for a ceasefire and open borders for humanitarian aid. 🤝
But not everyone is cheering. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the decisions as “a huge reward to terrorism,” insisting there will not be a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River.
On the flip side, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the recognitions as a necessary step toward a just and lasting peace in accordance with international legitimacy.
The moves come just before a High-Level Conference on the two-state solution—hosted by France and Saudi Arabia at the UN headquarters in New York. With momentum building, we might see more countries join the recognition wave soon. 👀
For now, the world is watching. Will this diplomatic shift turn the tide for peace? Stay tuned! 🕊️
