Imagine this: Iran’s top security council just announced a major move. After the UN Security Council failed to keep sanctions relief alive under the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) said it will "effectively" suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 🤯.
At a Saturday meeting chaired by President Masoud Pezeshkian, the SNSC criticized the E3—France, Britain and Germany—for what it called "ill-considered" actions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. Even with ongoing talks and proposals on the table, Tehran says the snapback of UN sanctions forced its hand.
The snapback mechanism, triggered by the E3 last month, allows UN sanctions to snap back within 30 days if Iran is seen as breaching the JCPOA. Since the UNSC vote on Friday did not extend sanctions relief, the new penalties are set to take effect later this month.
So, what’s next? The SNSC has tasked the Foreign Ministry to keep consulting "to safeguard national interests." With the IAEA cooperation now on hold, the future of nuclear diplomacy has become more uncertain than ever. Stay tuned as this story develops! 🌎🔍
