Israel Opens Temporary Gaza Escape Route as EU Eyes Trade Sanctions

The Israeli military announced on Wednesday it will open a temporary new route via Salah al-Din Street to let people escape Gaza City. 🚧 This corridor will stay open for 48 hours starting at midday.

Earlier, a heavy pre-dawn bombardment on Tuesday pushed troops deeper into Gaza City, the territory’s largest urban center. The army reports over 350,000 residents have fled south so far. Yet many Palestinians tell AFP there is no truly safe place and say they’d rather stay in their homes than face fresh displacement.

Meanwhile, the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza. Navi Pillay, head of the COI, said the evidence shows genocide “is occurring in Gaza and is continuing to occur.” 🕊️ Israel has responded by "categorically rejecting" the report and calling for the COI’s abolition.

Hamas condemned the assault as "systematic ethnic cleansing targeting our people in Gaza," while Qatar urged Israel to halt its advance, calling it "an extension of its genocidal war against the Palestinian people."

On the diplomatic front, the EU is proposing targeted trade sanctions on Israel, signaling growing concern over the humanitarian toll of the military operation. 🌐💔

With roughly one million people in Gaza City and surrounding areas as of August, this short-lived corridor offers a narrow window for escape. But amid deep uncertainty, many wonder if true safety can be found. Stay tuned for updates. ✨
