Seoul–Washington Tariff Talks Stall: Korean Firms in the Balance

Seoul and Washington’s tariff negotiations have hit a roadblock 🚧, according to South Korea’s presidential office. Talks have been on hold for some time, but President Lee Jae-myung is determined to protect Korean companies from hasty compromises.

The two sides agreed in July on a wide-ranging trade deal, but the devil’s in the details—especially around a mammoth $350 billion investment fund. While President Lee wants a quick win, he won’t sacrifice national interests just to meet a deadline.

"We cannot do everything the U.S. wants," a senior presidential official told reporters. "President Lee aims to reach a deal soon, but he is determined not to give up his role regarding the national interest to meet a deadline."

Top trade envoy Yeo Han-koo is now in the U.S. for follow-up talks. He told Yonhap News Agency that negotiations are still active, but "the devil is in the details."

With both sides eager to seal the deal, all eyes are on how these talks will unfold in the coming weeks. Will they strike the right balance between speed and safeguards? Stay tuned! 🔍✨
