Eastern Afghanistan Quake: 622 Dead, Rescue Efforts Ramp Up

On Monday, eastern Afghanistan was rocked by a deadly magnitude 6.3 earthquake hitting Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. The Ministry of Interior Affairs confirmed that the tremor has claimed at least 622 lives and left 1,555 people injured.

In the mountainous valleys of Kunar, the quake's force destroyed hundreds of homes, with authorities reporting 610 fatalities and around 1,300 wounded. Nearby Nangarhar saw 12 deaths and 255 injuries, with dozens of houses damaged beyond repair.

Abdul Mateen Qani, the ministry's spokesperson, highlighted the all-hands-on-deck response: 🚑 medical teams, 🚚 transport units, and 🍲 food support crews are racing to deliver life-saving aid. "Our priority is to reach every affected village and provide comprehensive support," Qani said.

Meanwhile, rescue squads from the Ministries of Defense, Interior, and Public Health swiftly moved in to evacuate the wounded. Many were airlifted to Nangarhar Regional Hospital, according to local outlet TOLOnews.

Despite the challenges of rugged terrain and aftershocks, these teams are working around the clock to bring blankets, tents, and medical supplies to survivors. In a region already facing hardship, the spirit of solidarity shines as communities come together to rebuild.
