😢 The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher declared at a Geneva briefing that famine in Gaza is “a moment of collective shame.” He urged world leaders to act fast: “It is a famine we could have prevented, if we had been allowed.”
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) committee confirmed the famine and warned that by end of September, nearly a third of Gaza’s population—over 640,000 people—could face catastrophic hunger, with another 1.14 million at emergency levels.
📢 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called it “a man-made disaster, a moral indictment and a failure of humanity itself.” He reminded that as the occupying power, Israel has duties under international law to ensure food and medical supplies for civilians.
Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA Commissioner-General, echoed the man-made label, blaming months of blocked aid. Meanwhile, Israel has rejected the IPC findings, calling the report “an outright lie.”
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports 273 people, including 112 children, have died from starvation and malnutrition since the conflict began. Israel’s tightened blockade after the March 2 ceasefire collapse has severely limited food, fuel and aid deliveries.
✋ At the same time, Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigned after facing pushback over calls for tougher policies on settlements. His departure highlights the growing global pressure for urgent action in Gaza.
