In a bid to tackle rising crime and keep Washington, D.C. safe, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he’ll introduce a new crime bill and ask Congress to approve long-term federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department. 🚨👮
Speaking after an event at the Kennedy Center, Trump said he’s asking for extensions beyond the initial period because you can’t have just 30 days.
Earlier this week, Trump signed an executive order declaring a 30-day crime emergency in the nation’s capital to protect public servants, citizens and tourists, and ensure the federal government can operate safely. Any extension past 30 days needs Congress on board.
He also labeled D.C.’s push for statehood as ridiculous, adding he wants to straighten out the city’s issues first.
Meanwhile, National Guard units began deploying on Tuesday night with around 800 troops expected to be fully operational by week’s end to support local law enforcement. ⏰🇺🇸
As Congress debates the plan, the clock is ticking on whether federal control of D.C. police will stretch beyond the 30-day window.
