Gaza Crisis: WHO Warns of Man-Made Starvation

In a compelling call to action, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Gaza is facing man-made mass starvation. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated during a virtual press conference that the crisis is driven by a long-standing blockade that severely limits humanitarian aid.

More than 100 aid agencies have raised red flags over the deepening hunger crisis in the region. Tonnes of essential food, clean water, and medical supplies remain stuck outside the enclave, leaving the 2.2 million residents of Gaza in a perilous situation. ⚠️

Recent reports from Gaza health authorities reveal that 10 more people died overnight due to starvation, bringing the total to 111 since the conflict began. At least 21 child deaths from malnutrition have been reported, highlighting the tragic human cost of the shortage of resources.

The aid halt lasted nearly 80 days between March and May, and even after partial easing in May, the flow of supplies has been far from enough. Screenings show that roughly 10% of Gaza's population, including up to 20% of pregnant women, is suffering from moderate to severe malnutrition. In July alone, 5,100 children were admitted to malnutrition programs, with 800 in severe condition. 😢

While authorities maintaining the blockade insist that these restrictions are in place to prevent resources from reaching militants, aid agencies remain focused on the escalating humanitarian tragedy. Global attention continues to build as discussions intensify about ensuring safe passages for critical aid, in hopes of relieving the suffering of those in Gaza.
