In a dramatic update from Gaza, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that its staff residence and main warehouse in Deir al-Balah were struck by multiple airstrikes on Monday. These attacks, which included three separate strikes on the staff residence, ignited a dangerous fire that caused extensive damage and compromised life-saving operations in an already strained region. 🔥
Local reports indicate that Israeli tanks advanced into the southern and eastern parts of Deir al-Balah, with shelling that hit houses and mosques—tragically resulting in at least three Palestinian lives lost and several others wounded.
According to WHO, the unfolding scene forced women and children to flee on foot toward Al-Mawasi, while male staff members and family members were detained, interrogated, and even made to remove parts of their clothing for security checks at gunpoint. Two WHO staff and two family members were detained, with three later released and one remaining in custody. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for their immediate release and stressed the urgent need for staff protection.
Meanwhile, an Israeli Defence Forces statement explained that troops had reacted to shots fired toward them, adding that they had warned local civilians to evacuate the area for safety. Deir al-Balah, which has long been a refuge for Palestinians displaced by over 21 months of conflict, now finds itself in even deeper crisis as attacks disrupt essential humanitarian operations.
Despite these setbacks, the WHO remains committed to its mission in Deir al-Balah and plans to expand its operations in the area. As tensions rise, many around the globe are urging for an immediate de-escalation and a renewed focus on humanitarian aid amid this evolving situation.
