Sweida, Syria – A wave of calm has returned to the predominantly Druze city as Bedouin fighters withdraw, leaving residents hoping for a pause in the chaos. On Sunday morning, locals reported an eerie silence with no gunfire, even as the challenges of daily life remain. 🤞
Kenan Azzam, a local dentist, described the scene as a "tense calm." Despite the quiet, residents continue to struggle with a lack of water and electricity, and hospitals remain overwhelmed by the aftermath of recent clashes.
The conflict began a week ago with clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters. Damascus had sent troops in an effort to quash the unrest, but after accusations of widespread violations and being hit by Israeli strikes, the troops eventually withdrew under a truce agreed on Wednesday.
The United States has also stepped up calls for an end to the fighting, adding international pressure to stabilize the situation. While the withdrawal may signal a temporary respite, rebuilding essential services and community trust remains a pressing challenge for the people of Sweida.
