In a distressing update from Gaza, WHO's director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the Al-Amal hospital, one of the few functioning medical facilities in the region, is now "virtually out of service."
Intense military activity has obstructed access to the hospital, making it nearly impossible for new patients to receive the care they desperately need. This blockage is contributing to more preventable deaths as patients are unable to reach treatment in time. 😢
Despite the grim situation, two emergency medical teams – one local and one international – are working tirelessly with the very limited supplies available to serve the remaining patients on-site.
With the closure of Al-Amal, the Nasser Medical Complex now stands as the sole hospital in Khan Younis equipped with an intensive care unit. Just a few days ago, on June 5, the WHO noted that both Al-Amal and al-Nasser hospitals were struggling to treat the wounded due to serious shortages of medicines and equipment after two months of a total blockade.
Even though some humanitarian aid has recently been allowed into Gaza by Israeli authorities, it is far below what is urgently needed, underscoring a critical healthcare crisis in the territory.
