China-U.S. Trade Talks: Tariff Tensions & New Dialogue

China is stepping into a key round of trade discussions amid tense tariff measures from the new U.S. administration. In a move that could reshape economic relations, Vice Premier He Lifeng is set to head to Switzerland from May 9 to 12 for talks with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The Ministry of Commerce noted that recent unilateral tariff actions, considered illegal and unreasonable, have not only disrupted China-U.S. trade but have also unsettled the global economic order. This bold comment comes as U.S. senior officials hinted at adjusting these tariffs, prompting China to carefully weigh global expectations alongside its own interests and the appeals of U.S. businesses and consumers.

Officials reaffirmed that whether through confrontation or negotiation, China’s commitment to protecting its development interests and upholding international fairness remains unchanged. As the old saying goes, "listen to what someone says and watch what they do," reminding everyone that sincerity is key in any negotiation. 🤝

The message is clear: the door is open for constructive dialogue based on mutual respect, equal consultation, and shared benefits. However, any attempt to mix hesitant words with coercive tactics will not sway China from its steadfast principles.
