East Midlands Fuels UK-China Cargo Trade

Britain's East Midlands Airport is soaring into a new era of global trade. In a landmark deal with Chinese cargo giants Central Airlines and YunExpress, the airport is set to become a vital hub in UK-China trade.

Starting with twice-weekly flights using Boeing 777 freighters and aiming to scale up to five regular services, this move marks the debut of these Chinese operators in the UK. With nearly $1.6 billion in trade with China each year, its 24/7 operations offer unmatched flexibility compared to other hubs with night-time restrictions. ✈️

According to Ioan Reed-Aspley, Head of Corporate Affairs, "East Midlands is one of the most centrally located airports in the UK." This prime location ensures swift distribution of goods across the country.

Adding to the momentum, British operator One Air, which relocated its base from Heathrow to East Midlands last year, is planning scheduled services to China—possibly via Hong Kong and Muscat—as confirmed by Captain Joe Batt. This development opens up exciting new trade routes.

However, despite the increasing inbound flow of Chinese goods, many Boeing freighters return to the Chinese mainland empty. To address this inefficiency, the airport is collaborating with local businesses to better utilize the 110-tonne capacity of each aircraft.

To further boost global trade, East Midlands Airport is also developing a new technology hub. Parcels of land surrounding the airport, including the site of the former Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, are being eyed for high-tech redevelopment focused on advanced logistics and manufacturing. 🚀

With demand for fast global delivery soaring, these dynamic developments position the airport as a key gateway for UK-China trade and a magnet for regional business investment.
