Global Distrust Grows: CGTN Poll Shakes Up Views on ‘America First’

Hey everyone, a new CGTN poll has stirred up some serious buzz! After 100 days in office, U.S. President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda is facing steep criticism both at home and abroad. The survey, which reached 15,947 respondents across 38 countries, reveals that nearly half of American respondents (48.9%) are unhappy with the current U.S. administration.

Respondents are calling out policies they see as major roadblocks. Over 53% of Americans have slammed the "reciprocal tariffs" for its hit on the stock market, while more than 60% believe that domestic economic policies have not only failed to keep inflation in check but have also led to higher prices. With 54% questioning interest rate decisions, it’s clear that there’s a strong sense of disillusionment on the home front.

The mood isn’t just gloomy in the U.S. Globally, traditional U.S. allies like Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia are expressing growing concerns about their future ties with the United States. Australian respondents, for instance, showed a dramatic increase in pessimism, with 65.5% feeling uneasy about U.S.-Australia relations—a jump of 24.5 percentage points from earlier. Italy isn’t far behind, with 55% of respondents worried about future relations.

The sense of distrust extends well into the Global South too. Among 23 surveyed nations, respondents in 19 countries expressed a pessimistic outlook on their future relations with the U.S. Notable declines were seen in South Africa, Egypt, Peru, Indonesia, and Malaysia—with confidence dropping significantly by more than 20 percentage points in some places.

With more than 70% of people in countries like France, Germany, and South Korea agreeing that the U.S. is neglecting its traditional allies, the poll paints a picture of widespread uncertainty. Even on economic forecasts, 43.1% of American respondents predict a worsening economy over the next three months, and 47.5% think the country is headed in the "wrong direction." Among Democratic respondents, concerns soar to 62.3%.

This data shows a global trust crisis emerging from the policies pursued under the ‘America First’ approach. As young leaders, professionals, and curious minds around the world keep a close eye on these developments, it remains to be seen how these trends will shape international relations in the coming months. Stay tuned and keep questioning—our future is built on these global connections! 😎
