Mandalay Miracle: 400+ Survivors Rescued After 7.9 Quake

An intense 7.9 earthquake rocked Myanmar’s Mandalay region last Friday, leaving a trail of destruction and despair. The quake caused widespread damage, collapsing residential buildings and trapping many individuals under the rubble.

Local and international rescue teams have been working non-stop—even after the critical 72-hour window—to bring hope amid the chaos. Their relentless efforts have pulled more than 400 survivors from the wreckage, with 403 rescued and 259 bodies recovered in Mandalay.

Tragically, the quake has led to staggering losses: 2,719 lives have been lost, 4,521 people injured, and 441 still missing. The devastation crossed borders too, with at least 19 fatalities reported in neighboring Thailand.

Fear of further aftershocks has forced many Mandalay residents to seek safety outdoors, with even the city’s 1,000-bed hospital moving patients to a car park under makeshift tarpaulin shelters. Aid groups, including the International Rescue Committee, are urgently calling for essential supplies such as tents, medical care, clean drinking water, and food.

As the Myanmar authorities observe a week-long mourning period—asking media to pause broadcasts and display symbols of respect—the resilient spirit of the community shines through. In the midst of this crisis, locals remain united and hopeful amidst uncertainty. 💪🙏
