U.S. Consumer Sentiment Dives Amid Tariff Chaos

U.S. consumer sentiment slipped for the third consecutive month in March, with the University of Michigan survey reporting a 10.5% drop to a reading of 57.9—27.1% lower than last March.

Across all age groups, education levels, incomes, and regions, consumers are feeling the pinch as uncertainty mounts. Many are struggling to plan ahead in a landscape shaken by persistent tariff chaos and wild policy swings, making the future seem as unpredictable as a rollercoaster ride 🎢.

Adding to the tension, year-ahead inflation expectations surged from 4.3% to 4.9% this month—the highest level since November 2022—with long-run expectations also climbing from 3.5% in February to 3.9% in March, marking the largest month-over-month jump since 1993.

These worrying trends underscore growing concerns over personal finances, labor markets, and overall business conditions. As the U.S. economy faces these challenges, consumers remain on high alert, waiting for clearer signals about what the future might hold. 😱
